Online Pinch Analysis Tool

About the Author

Jeffrey S. Umbach started coding in 1995 and has worked in nearly a dozen programming languages, both on the web (HTML, Javascript, Perl, PHP) and off the web (C++, Visual Basic, Java, Fortran). After working professionally as a software developer, computer technician, and system administrator for several years he turned his sights on the field of chemical engineering and enrolled at the University of Illinois at Chicago (Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering: Conferred May 2010).

This web application is the result of a undergraduate research project undertaken with his advisor, Dr. Ludwig C. Nitsche, with the objective to create an interactive visual tool for helping students to understand the concepts of pinch analysis. Jeff decided early into the design process to create a user interface that would give the user the flexibility to explore the pinch analysis process in a manner that is not too linear but without making it too easy to get lost and frustrated. The user is also able to save their input data in order to perform another analysis at a later time, as well as save the results of their work in PDF format.

Jeff's primary interests in chemical engineering are unit operations and computer simulation.
